"…The chalkboard is an apt metaphor here, because the earliest of Johns's "Catenary" paintings, which he began around the time of his MoMA retrospective, consist primarily of thickly painted, empty gray grounds surrounded by trompe l'oeil intimations of wooden frames. Bridge, 1997, which became the first of a series ultimately comprising nineteen paintings, feels almost empty compared with the canvas described above.l Nearly ten feet across, the work contains little more than a diamond pattern running down its right side, two insets of star formations, the outline of a handkerchief "tacked" near the left margin, and a string traversing the picture's surface. It would be untrue to suggest that the canvas broke completely with the past - Johns's works never do - but it did herald a major turn in his art, a new twist in his understanding of his paintings' delicate poise between the pictorial world they contain and the physical one that contains them…" Extrait de "Suspended Animation" par Scott Rothkopf.
